Suomussalmen lukio - Suomussalmi upper secondary school

Suomussalmi upper secondary school was founded in 1963. The building we are using today was built in 1967. The whole building was renovated in 2009 and all the classrooms got up-to-date technical equipment, including computers, data projectors and video conferencing facilities.

Our principal since 1974, Matti Tuura, retired in 2010. The present principal is Timo Pulliainen.
The school was transferred from the municipality of Suomussalmi to the province of Kainuu at the beginning of 2005 as the regional administration experiment in Kainuu began. This first self-governing regional administration in continental Finland is known as the Joint Authority of Kainuu Region.

Suomussalmi upper secondary school belongs to the tight network of four upper secondary schools in the area, the affiliated upper secondary schools in Kainuu. The schools in this network, in Suomussalmi, Puolanka and Paltamo, work closely together and have a common principal and similar daily schedules. Video conferencing equipment is constantly used to offer small groups of students in separate schools a wider range of subjects to study.

Suomussalmi upper secondary school has about 150 students in 2010. Our aim is to offer future and environment-oriented high-quality education to our students, with a special focus on multiform teaching. Most of our school’s international contacts are now with Russia, Sweden and Germany, but there has been cooperation with the Netherlands, for example.
